Delhi
Day 2

Delhi highlights

Welcome to your first morning in Delhi, the capital of modern India and a city that offers a unique historical perspective on the past and the future. Once greeted by your private guide, enjoy a cycle rickshaw ride around the historic district of Old Delhi. Immerse yourself in this charismatic city’s intoxicating yet chaotic charm on one of these light, three-wheeled vehicles driven by an expert who understands how to negotiate what can appear to be non-navigable streets – it’s quite an art! This is an offbeat and truly “Only in India” experience.

Visit Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque and plunge into the bustling streets of Old Delhi. Explore Chandni Chowk, the main street lined with shops selling everything from exquisite silver jewellery to perfumes and piping hot jalebis, a deep-fried Indian desert. As you explore the market, you can sample some of Delhi’s delicious street food before heading to the nearby Red Fort.

Visit two monuments from Delhi’s past: Qutub Minar (an imposing tower built in the 13th century by Qutub-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim ruler of northern India) and Humayun’s tomb (begun by Emperor Humayun and finished by his wife after his death; a masterpiece of Mughal architecture). Drive along the ceremonial avenue, Rajpath, past India Gate (a towering archway in the middle of a crossroad), President House (a palatial building built on 330 acres with a private garden designed by Edwin Lutyens), and Parliament House (symbol of Indian democracy)having you feeling like a true New Dehli native before returning to your hotel.

Day 3

Taj Mahal and Agra Fort visit

After breakfast, you will check out from your hotel for a comfortable drive to the city of love – Agra.

Agra is one of the best-known destinations on any India itinerary. Upon arrival in Agra, you will arrive at your hotel for check-in before heading out with your local English-speaking guide for a visit to the Taj Mahal, an architectural masterpiece. Construction began in 1631 and took some 22 years to complete. It is believed that more than 20,000 craftsmen worked around the clock on this magnificent edifice. The Taj Mahal’s exterior is made of marble and reflects rose and golden tints at sunrise and sunset, while it is dazzling white during the day. Visualising the Taj Mahal in any surroundings other than its paradoxical garden is impossible.

Later, visit the magnificent forts of the Mughal era—Agra Fort. When the Mughal Emperor Akbar established his supremacy in Northern India, he began his first architectural venture: rebuilding Agra Fort as a beautiful palace with marble and mosaic. Richly decorated, it was in a part of this fort that Shah Jahan spent his last years—confined by his son Aurangzeb. His private quarters have a magical view of the Taj Mahal across the river Yamuna. Today, this is a World UNESCO Heritage Site. Return to the hotel where the evening will be at your leisure.

Agra - Jaipur

After breakfast, check out from the hotel for a comfortable drive to the deserted city of Fatehpur Sikri – a city planned by Mughal emperor Akbar as his new capital. A 16th-century English traveller Ralph Fitch described it as ‘considerably larger than London and more populous.

After visiting Fatehpur Sikri continue your drive to Jaipur in you comfortable private car. Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and one of India’s “Golden Triangle” cities. It is widely known as the “Pink City” because of its famous pink buildings in the old town.

After checking in to your hotel, the rest of your day is at leisure to explore this famous city’s many forts and palaces.

Day 5

Jaipur Highlights

Our Deluxe travellers will get an early start to experience the daily life of locals in Jaipur. They’ll visit morning markets, walk through narrow alleys, and witness famous snack sellers who have been in business for more than 90 years. They will also get the opportunity to participate in morning prayers at the Hindu temple before returning to the hotel for breakfast.

After breakfast at the hotel, head out with your private English-speaking guide to visit the magnificent Amber Fort and experience a blessing at the Shila Mata Temple. Amber Palace, also known as Amber Fort, is one of the most beautiful palaces in India. With its large ramparts, maze-like passages and cobbled paths, the fort overlooks Maota Lake, the primary water source for the Amer Palace.

In the afternoon, take a trip to the City Palace Museum to see an imposing blend of traditional Rajasthani and Mughal Art. The museum has robes of royal princes, carpets, an armoury and miniature paintings portraying court scenes, battle scenes, and processions.

Indulgence travellers will enjoy an exclusive private tour of the residential areas of the royal family, which is restricted to general visitors. There they will enjoy a cup of tea/coffee in one of the living rooms before taking memorable pictures of these beautifully decorated rooms where Princess Diana had once dined.

Next, visit the awe-inspiring Jantar Mantar, a stone astrological and astronomical Observatory and a photo visit to the Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) before spending some time in the city’s crowded and colourful bazaars picking up your final souvenirs for the day.

Breakfast included

Note: We do not encourage an elephant back ride at the fort, where the animal is used as a taxi and made for walking on the concrete and stone paths. Instead, we can offer an optional exclusive interaction with rescued elephants at Dera Amer, where you can paint the elephant with natural colours that do not damage the skin and bathe them before enjoying lunch from locally grown organic vegetables. More information can be found in your travel booklet if you would like to include this experience.

Day 7

Varanasi highlights

Early this morning, embark on a boat ride down the Ganges. The sounds of conch shells and chants from the temples will fill your ears as you watch the locals bathe and perform religious rituals.

Afterwards, head back to your hotel for breakfast, then set out with your guide for a day of sightseeing in Varanasi.

Visit the Bharat Mata Temple, which features a marble map of India and is dedicated to Mother India. Next up, pay your respects at the red-coloured Durga Temple, known for its playful monkeys.

The New Vishwanatha Temple, home to one of the largest universities in the country, is a magnificent white marble structure shining in the afternoon sun against a pale blue sky.

In the afternoon, proceed to Sarnath, where Buddha gave his first sermon and founded his monastic community. The museum at Sarnath is among the most important in India and contains carvings representing a range of styles.

Locals gather around an altar and perform an Aarti ceremony each evening at sundown on the banks of the holy river Ganges. The lighting of the lamps for the Aarati is of great significance: it denotes spiritual illumination and truth; it signifies the destruction of ego in light of true knowledge — or union with the Universe. It is an unforgettable spiritual experience that feeds your soul and gladdens your heart; it’s an event that makes you feel like you’ve witnessed perfection.

Deluxe and Indulgence travellers will enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Varanasi - Kochi

Enjoy breakfast and the morning at leisure before being transferred to Varanasi airport, where you will catch your onward flight to Kochi via Bangalore.

Kochi, nicknamed “Queen of the Arabian Sea” due to its natural harbour, is a city of islands connected to Ernakulam on the mainland by bridges and ferries. The exciting city of Kochi perfectly reflects the eclecticism of Kerala. This quaint town has seen historic visits from sea-faring traders in the past from Portugal, China etc., bringing to it different cultures that make up its fabric.

On arrival in Kochi, you will be greeted by your English-speaking driver, who will assist in transferring you to your hotel. Check in to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the evening at your leisure.

Day 9

Kochi highlights

Meet your local English-speaking guide for a city tour of Kochi. The first stop is the Jewish Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in the Commonwealth. It’s an interesting little place with hand-painted willow pattern floor tiles from China. Next, visit the Mattancherry Palace, built by the Portuguese in 1557. This palace was presented to the ruler of Kochi as a goodwill gesture. The most important feature of this palace is a series of exquisite murals depicting scenes from Hindu mythology—the Ramayana and Puranic legends connected with Shiva and Vishnu, Krishna, Kumara and Durga. Stop at the St. Francis Church, the oldest European-built church in India, before visiting the unique Chinese fishing nets operating on principles of physics advanced for their times. The Chinese fishing nets found here are the only ones of their kind in India.

Depending on your chosen standard, Comfort travellers will be guided to a fantastic area for lunch at their own expense. Deluxe and Indulgence travellers will immerse themselves in the spicy world of authentic Indian curry dishes. A local Christian family in Kerala will invite you into their home to show you how they cook traditional food. You will learn how to prepare some of their most famous dishes, which you will enjoy with them over lunch.

Day 12

Munnar – Alleppey - Kumarakom

After breakfast, your English-speaking driver will transfer you to Alleppey, where you will embark on a cruise through the backwaters of Kerala. These waterways are a network of canals, rivers, and lakes that wind for 1500 kilometres from one end of the state to the other. Houseboats once served as a means of transportation for local goods from remote areas to towns; today, houseboats are converted ‘kettuvalloms’ designed for a comfortable cruise and overnight stays. The boats are built with bamboo mats, palm leaves, and coir rope; some even have canopies to shield guests from the sun when desired.

Dining on board is an experience in itself, with ethnic meals and delicacies prepared on board by a personal cook. Specialties include white prawns, pearl spotted fish, crabs, and mussels.

After your backwaters cruise, you will be transferred to your Kumarakom hotel for check-in. The rest of the day is at leisure for  you to explore the area, or relax.
